Betting Odds Explained

A price tells you two things at once: what a winning bet returns, and what chance the operator is giving it. The second one is the part worth learning to read.

Decimal odds — the only format on a Serbian ticket

Serbian operators quote decimal odds, and nothing else. Multiply your stake by the price and that is what comes back, stake and all: 500 dinars at 2.50 returns 1,250 — 750 of it profit. A price of 2.00 is even money; below that you are backing a favourite.

What the number is really saying

Divide one by the price and you have the chance the operator is implying: 2.00 is 50%, 4.00 is 25%, 1.25 is 80%. There is nothing more to the conversion than that, and it is what makes two prices comparable across different matches.

Adding it up

Take every outcome in one market, add the implied percentages, and the sum passes 100%. Whatever is above 100 is the margin. Prices of 2.10, 3.40 and 3.60 imply 47.6, 29.4 and 27.8 — a total of 104.8%, so the operator keeps about 4.8%.

This is the one calculation that changes how you bet. Two operators can show the same match and keep very different amounts of it, and the difference comes out of your return on every bet you place there, not just this one. An offer is a one-off; the margin is a standing charge.

Margins are not uniform across markets either — our markets guide covers where the price is sharpest.

What a price does not tell you

A price is the operator's opinion plus its fee — it is not a measurement of the world. It shifts with the money as much as with events. Value, in the only sense the word has here, is when your own estimate of the chance is higher than the one the price implies — which means having an estimate, not a hunch.

Fractional and American

You will not see them on a Serbian ticket, but they turn up in commentary and on foreign sites. Fractional odds such as 5/1 give profit per unit staked — 5/1 is decimal 6.00. American odds show profit per 100 when positive, +150 being 2.50, and the stake required to win 100 when negative, -200 being 1.50.

Two habits are worth more than any system: convert the price to a percentage before you bet, and compare the same market at more than one operator. The first tells you what you are being offered; the second tells you whether it is any good.

Which markets to apply it to is in our markets guide. Betting is for adults only (18+).
